About the Authors

Leiyu Shi, DrPH, MBA, MPA

Dr. Leiyu Shi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and Co-Director of Johns Hopkins Primary Care Policy Center for the Underserved Populations. Dr. Shi's research focuses on primary care, health disparities, and vulnerable populations. He has conducted extensive studies about the association between primary care and health outcomes, particularly on the role of primary care in mediating the adverse impact of income inequality on health outcomes. Dr. Shi is also well known for his extensive research on the nation's vulnerable populations, in particular community health centers that serve vulnerable populations, including their sustainability, provider recruitment and retention experiences, financial performance, experience under managed care, and quality of care. Dr. Shi is the author of three textbooks and nearly 100 journal articles.

Douglas A. Singh, PhD, MBA

Dr. Douglas A. Singh is an Associate Professor in the School of Policy and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, South Bend. Dr. Singh earned his PhD in health services administration from the University of South Carolina in 1994. Before embarking on a career of teaching and research, he spent more than 15 years in the U.S. health care industry as a long-term care administrator, consultant, and corporate vice president. He is currently Associate Professor of Health Care Management in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, a systemwide school of Indiana University. He has authored Nursing Home Administrators: Their Influence on Quality of Care (Garland Publishing, 1997) and several journal articles and monographs on issues pertaining to long-term care and nursing home administrators.
